Top of the Agenda: U.S. Wants Blair for Mideast
The United States is pushing for Britain’s outgoing Prime Minister Tony Blair to serve as a special envoy (IHT) to the Middle East. If the proposal goes through, Blair would work to represent the interests of the United States, European Union, United Nations, and Russia – the so-called diplomat «Quartet» (Reuters) — in the region. The announcement comes alongside news that Israel’s Prime Minister Ehud Olmert will hold talks with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas on Sunday.
The push for resolution reveals increased urgency as signs show the Palestinian political situation further disintegrating. Abbas, who leads the Fatah Party, today ruled out talks with rival Hamas, saying the group was plotting to assassinate him (al-Jazeera). Meanwhile in the West Bank, Fatah militants are carrying out reprisals (LAT) as gunmen patrol the streets, ferreting out Hamas rivals and looting their properties.

Two years after French and Dutch voters rejected plans for a European Union constitution, EU leaders meet today to attempt to push through major legislative reforms of the body.
