Who started SeaChange?
SeaChange was co-founded and is led by former leaders of Goldman Sachs, with counsel from other leaders in finance, philanthropy, and the nonprofit world. Charles Harris, a former Partner and Managing Director of Goldman, is SeaChange’s Executive Partner and Chairman of the Board. He co-founded the firm with Robert Steel, formerly a Vice Chairman of Goldman Sachs, now an Under Secretary of the U.S. Treasury. Lincoln Caplan, a former journalist, member of the Yale Law School faculty as the Knight Senior Journalist, and management consultant with The Boston Consulting Group, is the firm’s Managing Partner. John Whitehead, formerly Co-Chairman of Goldman Sachs and SeaChange’s Honorary Chairman, proposed the general model for SeaChange and encouraged Charles Harris and Robert Steel to launch the venture.

What is SeaChange Capital Partners?
SeaChange is a nonprofit financial firm that aims to match outstanding nonprofit organizations in need of growth capital with donations from a network of wealthy individuals, foundations, and others. We expect to collaborate with these individuals and organizations and, as a result, to increase the flow of capital to the social sector and contribute to the vital long-term effort of creating for the sector more efficient financial capital markets.

Why was SeaChange started?
The flows of philanthropic capital in the United States are substantial, yet many of the beneficial traits of for-profit capital markets are missing in the nonprofit sector. High-performing nonprofit organizations that have proven their effectiveness continue to have limited access to growth capital. We believe these nonprofits should and can be financed with multi-million dollar rounds of funding when they demonstrate their need and readiness to use funds effectively.

What is the relationship between SeaChange and
The Goldman Sachs Group, Inc.?

Goldman Sachs made a major grant to SeaChange and is our founding donor. SeaChange is independently incorporated as a nonprofit and independently operated. The model for the relationship is that between Bain & Co., the management consulting firm, and The Bridgespan Group, the nonprofit that counsels foundations and nonprofit organizations. They are both fully independent, with the former supporting the latter in valuable ways.
