hebrew

με τίτλο

  • Israel < Is-ra-el < εις (‘ισχυρός’) + ρα (‘βασιλιάς’) + ηλ (‘ήλιος’)
  • Cain < Ka-en < Κα ην < Γα ην < Γήινος (‘από τη γη’).

Joseph Ezekiel Yahuda (born on July 29, 1900 in Jerusalem and died in 1995 in Westcott, Surrey, England) was a British lawyer, freelance author and self-styled linguist. He was the son of Isaac Benjamin Ezekiel Yahuda, a longtime researcher and linguist. In 1982, he published a book entitled »Hebrew is Greek, Greek is Hebrew», in which he proposed the theory that the Hebrew and Arabic languages are Greek in origin. He claimed that virtually all Hebrew and Arabic words could be «derived» from Greek ones. Examples of the etymologies he proposed are the following:

*»Israel» < »Is-ra-el» < εις (‘powerful’) + »ρα» (‘king’) + »ηλ» (‘sun’)

*»Cain» < »Ka-en» < Κα ην < Γα ην < Γήινος (‘from the earth’).

Published Works:

*Joseph E. Yahuda, »Hebrew is Greek, Greek is Hebrew». Oxford: Becket Publications, 1982.

*Joseph E. Yahuda, »Law and Life According to Hebrew Thought». New Series, Vol. 26, No. 3 (January 1936), pp. 283-292.

I also have a list of criticisms made towards Yahuda’s 1982 work if you want. Leave a comment on my blog at hellenicempire@blogspot.com if you need anything else or if you agree/disagree about showing Joseph E. Yahuda on your blog.

Again, even if Yahuda’s linguistic theories are incorrect, people deserve to know who he is. Realistically, there are a plethora of scholars who provided theories that were eventually proven false. Yet, their contributions are still recognized in Wikipedia. Of course, one reason why the Yahuda article was deleted was because «there was no evidence of his book having sold over 5000 copies.» Another reason entails Yahuda not eliciting many Google hits. To me, these are not very good reasons.

Overall, I am happy to know that there is someone who actually cares about articles created on Wikipedia that are unfortunately deemed as «useless» even if they provide some positive contribution to humankind’s collective knowledge.

HEBREW IS GREEK

THE WORK OF JOSEPH YAHUDA

A book that «mysteriously disappeared» soon after its publication.

In 1982, a suppressed, ages-old, historical truth, was resurrected through
the publication of a book by Becket Publications of Oxford, England (ISBN O
7289 0013 O). The book, published in English, and titled Hebrew is Greek,
was written by lawyer, linguist and researcher, Joseph Yahuda, the son of
Isaac Benjamin Ezekiel Yahuda, an ethnic Jew and longtime researcher and
linguist. Though Jewish both by nationality and religion, J. Yahuda could be
considered a Greek– according to Isocrates’ definition of a Hellene [see
definition below. ed.], since his decades-long, unbiased, and meticulously
thorough search reveals the linguistic relationship of numerous groups of
words in Hebrew, Greek and Arabic. Work that was published without fear or
hesitation by a scholar whose only concern was for the discovery of the
truth.

Following the book’s publication, and while only a limited number of copies
circulated for a few fortunate individuals, the book disappeared from the
face of the earth. It was as if an invisible hand intervened and blocked its
circulation. It cannot be found at any public library, it is not sold at any
bookstore on earth, not even in a curiosity or antique shop. [Rare book
dealers, in the U.S. and the U.K., have told TGR that there have been
inquiries after the book, but that they have been unable to locate a copy
anywhere. ed.] The only information available about the book throughout the
world is its title. No book reviews on this book were ever published,
neither positive nor negative, moderate or offensive. Nor, it seems, has
there been any other evaluation of the work. One must eventually come to the
inescapable conclusion that every one of the copies originally published was
somehow withdrawn through some sort of a secret operation with a global
reach.

Concerns posed by another Jewish intellectual who wrote the preface of the
book.

The research published in the book covers 718 pages. The introduction was
written by Jewish professor Saul Levin, though no enthusiasm on his part was
evident in his introduction. He admits that following the 1977 publication
of his book entitled, The Indo-European and Semitic Languages, J. Yahuda got
in touch with him, and they maintained a fruitful relationship through
correspondence, though they never actually met in person. The reason for the
interest in J. Yahuda expressed by S. Levin, as he himself confessed, was
the publication of several writings by J. Yahuda, such as the La Palestine
Revisite, written in 1928, Law and Life According to Hebrew Thought (1932)
and This Democracy (n.d.), published by Pitman. Professor Levin learned of
the contents of the book [from the proofs which were sent to him from time
to time] for which he wrote the introduction gradually, as it had already
been sent to the printer. As Professor Levin disclosed: «It was J. Yahuda’s
congeniality and my inherent curiosity that did not allow me to refuse the
writing of the introduction.» [For a better understanding as to why
Professor Levin was not enthusiastic about writing the introduction,
consider the fact that] the black Jew, Martin Bernal, has stated: «Saul
Levin was among the many Jewish individuals who worked on the publication of
[my] book, Black Athena.» A book which has been deemed to be a disgrace and
a discredit to serious scholarship by the vast majority of specialists who
have read it.

Joseph Yahuda speaks about his work

In the preface of his book, J. Yahuda notes:

This ecumenical research will be reviewed by three separate specialists, one
for each language researched, although each specialist does have knowledge
of the other two languages. This is not an error committed only by me. I
attempted repeatedly, yet unsuccessfully, to find more scholars who would be
willing to assist me in my quests. As an example of what I was up against,
at the very beginning of an hours-long meeting, one potential colleague
exclaimed: «All of this is garbage and we are all wasting our time.» My
answer was: «Both you, and I, will be judged for the words we say, whenever
we discuss my work.» I hold no hostility or bitterness because of such
small-minded opposition to my belief. In fact, during the progress of my
research, I twice attempted to arouse [this man’s] interest, but in vain. A
little while after the meeting referred to above, I mentioned his degrading
comment to Christodoulos Hourmouzios, a graduate of the University of
Athens, and an acknowledged specialist on Homer, and he said: ‘ I think you
are one of the greatest linguists I know’; he promised complete cooperation
with me. Unfortunately, before we could begin our work, he passed away.

«There were others who admitted that they had been convinced; that something
did really exist in my theory. However, they did think that my belief in the
correspondence of Hebrew with Greek was rather exaggerated. They said I was
too ambitious, and suggested, for my own good, that I expect less and adopt
a ‘less controversial view.’ One of them, Sir Leon Simon (A British Lord of
Jewish descent), a known classicist who knew Hebrew, attended my first
lecture on the issue on the evening of Jan. 14th, 1959.He did this even
though he was old and had to travel a long distance in bad weather and heavy
fog. He introduced me, briefly and carefully, not wanting to commit himself
to any decision until the end of my speech. Then, before the audience was
asked to pose questions, he said the following, which I noted: ‘I don’t
believe that everyone will agree with everything J. Yahuda has told us, as
he may have thought that everyone understood what he was saying. Despite any
doubts that may exist, I am sure of one thing. He has resolved a mystery
that had created confusion for scholars for the past 2.000 years. For, if he
is correct in stating that many Greek words that begin with sk were
transformed in Hebrew as if sk was a digraph [a combination of two letters
to make one simple sound. ed.], or one of the two letters lost, then Homer
was not wrong when he left the vrachi [ abbreviated ] vowel at the beginning
of the word Skamandros, as in his famous line: ‘On Cantho%n kaleousi theoi%,
a%ndre*s de Ska%mandron’. [The Gods called Xanthos, mortal men Skamandros.
ed.] I also had a fruitful interview with a scholar of international fame,
which was then followed by a series of exchanges of correspondence. This
correspondence ceased after he sent me a note, wherein he wrote: ‘It could
also be possible that you would say that the English word ball comes from
the Greek ba%llw, or that you discover a connection between chow and show
since chows are exhibited at shows.

«The result was that I was obliged to fall back on my own sources, and to
depend only on my own efforts, thus devoting my free time to this research
for the past 30 years or more. Two things kept me going: the unfailing
support of my wife, Cecile, and the unprecedented emotions we felt with
every new discovery. When my wife was asked by a friend how she was sure of
my work, since she knew neither Greek nor Hebrew, she answered: ‘But, I know
my husband. He hates speculating, he always insists on finding proof. As a
lawyer, he is able to evaluate this proof. He tells me that he has plenty of
proof that is convincing, and I believe him.’ There is truly a plethora of
‘proof that is convincing’ which I have attempted to make available, not
only to those technically specialized, but also to interested,
non-specialist researchers.»

Yahuda realizes the significance of Greek Civilization

«I was somewhat familiar with the Bible, as stated above. My brother,
Solomon, and I learned the New Testament in Hebrew translation from a copy
that my father had, as part of his personal library. For years, the distant
Biblical past was alive in my mind: I lived with the vision of the pyramids
to such an extent, and my passion for the Bible was so great, that I
developed hostile feelings for the Greeks and Romans. Strangely, this
hostility did not involve the Egyptians, who were our enemies, had been the
enemies of our forefathers and had so deeply influenced post-Biblical
Hebrew. Neither had I been able to learn more than the necessary Latin
needed for my law education and practice. However, my feelings for the
Greeks and Romans have changed radically since then. Now I realize that our
differences were similar to those of a civil war, as fratricidal as the
taking of Troy had been, for I became convinced that the Jews are of Greek
descent. This revolutionary transformation took place around the time I was
thirty years old, following the publishing of my book Law and Life according
to Hebrew Thought. That year (1932), I became interested in biology as a
‘hobby’. During my haphazard study of the issue, I came across various Greek
words that were strikingly similar to the Hebrew words of the Bible, and I
drew the conclusion that the Greeks had borrowed them from us. I began
debating the idea of whether or not I should one day begin a systematic
comparison of the two languages. At that time, I was still fascinated with
the more traditional studies, and, like everyone else, I believed without a
doubt that the Semitic languages were Semitic and the Aryan languages were
Aryan. These two could not be mixed. At the same time, though, I was
thinking that it would be interesting to collect anddeconstruct a complete
list of groups of similar words so as to demonstrate the degree of influence
of Hebrew on Greek at the time before Alexander the Great (considering that
the reverse influence became stronger following his conquests). I knew very
little of where this research would lead me and what the results would show.

«I had such little knowledge of Greek that all I knew were the first letters
of the alphabet, knowledge that I had acquired by chance during my studies
of mathematics and geometry. I remember asking my friend Gerald Emanuel, in
a teashop in 1932, to write the whole Greek alphabet on the bottom of a
half-written page. The years passed, but when I published my book Biology
and New Medicine in 1951, I then had the opportunity to spend all of my free
time on researching those possible links that I suspected existed between
Biblical Hebrew and Greek. Following the acquisition of some rudimentary
knowledge of Greek grammar, I submerged into the translation of the
Septuagint, solely based on my memory of the meaning of the numerous pages
that I had chosen to read. Then I read Homer, comparing him to the Bible.
One page from the translation of the Iliad, one page from the Old Testament,
line for line, page by page; I started with Genesis and the first book of
the Iliad, along with the last book of the Odyssey and the 2nd book of
‘Chronicles.’ Day after day, the list of similar words grew longer, until it
reached 600 words — including words related to different views and
activities of life — which could not be attributed only to the borrowing
factor. In any case, history has not witnessed circumstances where such
elaborate borrowing would be possible on such a large scale. I was convinced
that this phenomenon went past the limits of borrowing, reaching the limits
of a genetic relationship. The door of genealogical descent stood before me
and I could not attempt to pass through it or climb above it. It should open
freely and widely and the key to this was the grammar. The only grammatical
characteristics that I knew of that were common to both Greek and Hebrew,
concerned the definite article and the dual number nouns [count nouns. ed.].
I stopped reading and began thinking and re-thinking the results of my
non-processed research. I used the materials I had: analyzing, classifying,
comparing these with the Biblical variations and the dialectic interchanges
of the Greek letters, selecting specific words to be compared. Thus, my
theory began to develop. Some of the Greek dialectic letters could be used
interchangeably, such as the letters ‘k’ and ‘t’, ‘o’ and ‘a’, ‘s’ and ‘d.’
I also noted a curious transformation with Hebrew words: a suffix to a Greek
word changed to a prefix in a Hebrew word. Early on during my research, I
tested the exactness of the words and verified their meanings. As the number
of tests increased, the more effective my research became, and the
confidence in my theory rose.

«From the beginning, I based a lot of my work on Arabic. With my theory, it
became possible for me to correct the translation of the Septuagint, using
the Septuagint and the translation of the Bible, using the Bible. These
discoveries cured me of my dyslexia in relationship to Greek and Hebrew and
made me capable of reading a Hebrew word as if it had been a variation of
the word. I formed a series of phonetic and morphology rules. I gradually
gathered a number of valuable facts. Some examples are that the declension
dotiki [dative] exists in Hebrew, that the masculine plural is the same in
Hebrew and Greek, and that, in general, a compound Greek verb is equivalent
to a Hebrew compound verb. I estimate that 9 out of each 10 words of the
[Jewish] Bible can be proved to have a purely Greek equivalent. Many issues
were resolved which prove that the Greeks and Jews hold some customs and
religious convictions in common, whereas the Hebrew language is proven to be
richer and more beautiful than believed until today because of the existence
of these groups of words. This whole matter is, in practice, consistent with
the following two proposals: Biblical Hebrew is Greek; and, the Jews are
Asian Greeks. In reality, the conclusion of this massive, extended and
complicated research can be summarized in the following brief sentence:
Hebrew is ‘Greek wearing a mask.'»

An example for the rest of his co-religionists

As already stated, the research of J. Yahuda restores part of a universal
truth that has fallen into oblivion for millennia. Not only is the Hebrew
language «Greek wearing a mask» (in other words, a distorted version of
Greek), but, as we have announced at international conventions, there is no
other language on the face of the earth except Greek. A few years ago, we
made this statement at a convention of the Literary Society Parnassos,
titled: «The Ecumenical Character of the Greek Language,» where we used
texts and images to prove this statement. All other languages are just
descendants or distorted dialects of Greek, adopted by the peoples.

Finally, we present one of the tables compiled by the undaunted scholar, J.
Yahuda, where Hebrew letters, along with their pronunciation in Hebrew
appear on the left, the equivalent Greek letters and their pronunciation in
the middle, and the Arabic letters and pronunciation on the right. In the
preface, just above the table shown below, Yahuda’s first theorem is
written, to wit: «The Greek and Hebrew alphabets demonstrate striking
similarity insofar as the order of the letters is concerned, their names,
their shapes and their pronunciation.»

We cannot omit to express our admiration for this great man, who, defying
the forces of darkness and medieval ignorance, proved to be an unbiased
scholar, unburdened by preconceived dogma and purposeful deception. A man
who broke the bonds of mischievous misinformation so prevalent in [the past]
century, and dared to defy traditional nationalistic and racist fanaticism
while declaring a revolution against the international forces of power. He
has achieved the level of a true Hellene. After discovering the truth, he
struggled to make it known, he revealed it and he published it without fear.
His acts were acts of patriotism, since he has raised his compatriots to a
level approaching the Greeks. He called them «Asian Greeks.» His life and
work truly pronounce him to be of equal value to a Greek, in contrast with
those of his compatriots who have denounced him and his book. Is it because
they are afraid or is it because they are unable to follow in his footsteps?

In Conclusion

Yahuda has scientifically proven that both Hebrew and Arabic are Greek in
their origin, as is true with the other languages of the world. It is to be
regretted that the speakers of this distorted Greek dialect do not take
advantage of this, so as to elevate themselves to free and Christ-loving
Greeks, as their compatriot Yahuda has done. Many of them prefer to live in
the dark; It is a fact to be pitied that some are fanatics who hate
everything Greek, especially her history and her language. In the past, many
such men appeared in the Roman State as politicians, academics or
administrators in the public sector, and fought against everything that was
Greek. Nowadays, such men cooperate with the global powers that are
propelling the world toward destruction. A destruction that can only be
avoided by a rebirth of the only salvation for humanity: Greek Civilization.

Note: The great rhetorician, Isocrates (436-338 B.C.), gave the following
definition of a Hellene in his Panagyricus:

Athens has so far outrun the rest of mankind in thought and speech that her
disciples are the masters of the rest, and it is due to her that the word
«Greek» is not so much a term of birth as it is of mentality, and is applied
to a common culture rather than a common descent.

FYROM is facing the facts that Macedonia is one and Greek

Posted by satyrikon στο 20 Οκτωβρίου, 2008

American Chronicle

Letters to the Editor

October 20, 2008

Hostile attitudes like FYROM nationalist (Risto Stefov on the American Chronicle) are a perfect examples of the propaganda and downright hate that is being posted online against the Greeks and the Greek American Community .We all know that the majority of people that read these articles know the writings come from a racist and biased self proclaimed Macedonian who hasn’t even lived in FYROM. Then again there are some others (the minority ) that really do believe what is being said about the Greeks online because they are historically challenged or are just racist’s themselves. This is unacceptable ! Here let me break it down for you all to read and understand (in layman terms).

The Prime Minister Dora Bakoyannis of Greece and about 99.9 % of the Greek Community likes to say that these «Macedonians» do not exist. In reality what the Greeks are saying is that they refuse to call these people «Macedonian» (not that there isn’t a super TINY FYROM community and neighborhood in Greece). Then again aren’t there little communities /neighborhoods of various nationalities that clique together just like this everywhere around the world? The answer is «yes».

To define the tension in a simple form rather than technical calling these FYRO-mians «Macedonian» implicitly undermines Greece’s own Macedonians historical identity and it is also a security threat to the country!

About 10 years ago the FYROM government helped organize this small minority group into the «Rainbow party of Greece» (based in Florina Macedonia). Notice Florina sounds Greek right ? Anyways, up until quite recently the FYROM government had claimed Greeks were oppressing hundreds of thousands of «Macedonians» ? OK What is that all about? Listen we all know Greece is a very tiny country with a small population itself and this » Rainbow Party» is less than 1% of the population. Imagine if a group tried to do this in the USA ? Not. There is also a huge patern of hostility, propaganda and outright lies being written and directed at the Greek American Community . I will break it down and simlify it for all of you all to read here in my article.

The first would be to deny that modern Greeks are even related to ancient ones . It’s preposterous to ask isn’t it? FYROM citizens do this and write this online (Ex Risto Stefov here on the American Chronicle) despite TONS of archaeological evidence and fact that Greek speaking people with Greek names knowing the Greek language have lived in Greece and in Macedonia for 4,000 years .

The Slavic’s did not arrive in the region of Greece until 600 AD. In addition, FYROM citizens could easily be much more recent immigrants from Bulgaria or other Slavic states whose numbers are in the hundreds of millions. Whereas tiny Greece is the ONLY native homeland for the Greek people . There are about 10 million Greeks .To make the the argument that FYROM-ians are the «REAL » Macedonians make it even less realistic and preposterous. You have to rationalize and ask yourself this ;»What do the FYROM-ians have in common with the ancients over the Albanians, Bulgarians or Turks?» These were other ethnic groups that have lived on Macedonian lands through history. Modern Greeks can still make sense of the «Koine Greek language» that Alexanderthe Great spoke and also spread to the world that he conquered . Those that speak the Katharevusa language better than those that speak Demotic.

The FYROM nationalists on the other hand speak a Bulgarian-Serbian hybrid that wasn’t even formalized until the 20th century and this is based on Cyrillic. Fact. FYROM-ian’s can’t read a single inscription from ancient Macedonian artifacts that have been dug up by archeologists which are written in (You guessed it !) «Koine Greek! Even their native spelling of «Macedonia» is different. They are «Macedonians» that don’t even speak the language ancient Macedonians spoke. This language was Greek.

Secondly is to deny that ancient Macedonians were even Greeks .Can you imagine? Ok Let’s bring up the Athenian orater Demosthenes who proclaimed that Macedonians were «barbarians «. Sounds so negative right ? Barbarian! Well, what they don’t tell you though the writings is that during any period of conflict between democratic Athens and the Kingdom of Macedonian the Greek city states were generally fighting all of the time. What also isnt being mentioned is that the ancient Greeks used the term «barbarian» as an example like being «un- American» . There are many examples of this in Greek writings. In fact even Socrates once called the Athenians «barbarians» and the list of so called «barbarians » goes on and on …. Get it? Then there is the issue of the Hellanodikai .These were the judges who decided if competitors were Greek enough to compete in Olympics. There are records of Macedonians voluntarily competing in Olympics will before Alexander the Great . See link below http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ancient_Macedonians#Participation_in_panhellenic_events

Quoting Alexander’s the Greats own views on his ethnicity at a speech he gave on being admitted to the Olympic games . You will never see this on a FYROM website .

«Men of Athens ,Had I not greatly at heart the common welfare of Hellas I should not have come to tell you; but I am myself Hellene by descent, and I would not willingly see Hellas exchange freedom for slavery….If you prosper in this war, forget not to do something for my freedom; consider the risk I have run, out of zeal for the Hellenic cause, to acquaint you with what Mardonius intends, and to save you from being surprised by the barbarians. I am Alexander of Macedon. (Herodotus, The Histories, 9.45)

Another tactic of propaganda and lies (posted online etc etc ) by FYROM’s so called journalists is the sence of » victimhood». They sob and write about how Greeks are opressive to them . Greece is an entirely different country! No one has been opressed! The facts of what they are really sobbing about is their insecurities about their own ethnic identity . Greece is the super «bad-bad» guy here because well they won’t or ever give up their own identities. The FYROM government has just realized their aren’t many FYROM nationals in Greece and thats a fact . Oh wel…Nice try but it’s not working . I invite you all in the free world to go visit Greece and you shall see for yourself too! Also , what is being argued for some time is that FYROM national «refugees» should be allowed to return to Greece and given «reparations». What is that all about ? A case in point to show how manipulative the FYROM-ians are with words. No one is a victim here not one FYROM-ian .What you don’t read is that those poor victimized «refugees» were Tito backed Slavic communists in Greece that tried to take Greece by force in the mid-20th century. Yes ! This is fact . When Greece had a civil war there where hundreds of thousands of Greek people that had died. hence it’s like asking Greeks to give reparations to the Nazis who wanted to take their whole country away !

The final grand finale of a method is to just throw and post insults online at Greeks and the Greek community .(Example Greeks are racists , Greeks are Nazi’s Greeks are commiting gerocide and Arian) How can you show empathy to these people ? Unfortunately when FYROMIAN ‘s become that hostile there really isn’t much room for any empathy. The Greeks and the Greek American community will not be ethnically cleansed or lectured by a 16 year old country that has all sorts of internal minority problems themselves. If they want something from Greece at this juncture all I can say is» MOLON LABE!». The Greek phrase Molōn labe! (Μολὼν λαβέ; approximate Classical Greek pronunciation [moln labé], Modern Greek [molon lave]), meaning «Come and take them!», is a classical expression of defiance reported by Plutarch in response to the Persian Army’s demand that the Spartans surrender their weapons.. It is roughly corresponding to the modern equivalent English phrase «over my dead body». It is an exemplary use of a laconic phrase.

Macedonia is one and Greek!

Secrets of Antikythera Mechanism,

The secrets of the worlds oldest calculating machine are revealed today, showing that it had dials to mark the timing of eclipses and the Olympic games.

Workings of Ancient ‘Computer’ Deciphered

By JOHN NOBLE WILFORD

July 31, 2008

After a closer examination of the Antikythera Mechanism, a surviving marvel of ancient Greek technology, scientists have found that the device not only predicted solar eclipses but also organized the calendar in the four-year cycles of the Olympiad, forerunner of the modern Olympic Games.

Was ancient Greek ‘calculator’ used to teach astronomy?

30 July 2008

Jo Marchant

INSCRIPTIONS on a mysterious 2000-year-old clockwork device suggest that the artefact was inspired by earlier devices made by the great Greek mathematician Archimedes.

The so-called «Antikythera mechanism» has puzzled historians since it was salvaged from an ancient shipwreck near the Greek island of Antikythera in 1901. It dates back to about 100 BC, and consists of more than 30 bronze gear wheels and pointers, enclosed in a wooden case.

500 BC Greek ship to shed light

on country’s ancient history

July 29th, 2008 by Mohit Joshi

Athens, July 29 : A 21-meters long ancient Greek ship, which archaeologists believe sank in a storm some 800 metres off the Gela coast in Greece while transporting goods from the Greek colony in Gela back to Greece in around 500 BC, has been pulled out of the seabed, where it lay for nearly 2500 years.

Op-Ed

State Department Web Info on Greece Needs Improvement

By Gene Rossides

March 4, 2008

Although the State Department’s “Background Note: Greece” on its website is more accurate than the false and misleading “Background Notes” on Cyprus and Turkey, it still needs substantial improvement.

People and History

Surprisingly, in the sections on “People” and “History” there is no mention of Greece’s Golden Age under Pericles and the birth of  democracy and the origins of Western Civilization.  I suggest the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs which issued the Background Note in November 2007 read the proclamation of the Congress and White House on the occasion of Greek Independence Day which details the origins of democracy and western civilization in Greece.

Regarding Greece’s actions in World War II, the “Background Note” fails to state that Greece said NO (OXI) to Mussolini’s demand to surrender on October 28, 1940 when Britain was fighting the Axis Powers alone.

It does state that “Despite Italian superiority in numbers and equipment, determined Greek defenders drove the invaders back into Albania” and that “Hitler was forced to divert German troops to protect his southern flank and overran Greece in 1941” and that “Following a very severe German occupation in which many Greeks died (including 90% of Greece’s Jewish community) German forces withdrew in October 1944, and the government-in-exile returned to Athens.”

The reference to “many Greeks died’ fails to state that 600,000 Greeks died, a staggering 9% of the then seven million population.

The Background Note also fails to state that Greece’s defeat of Mussolini’s forces was the first defeat of the Axis Powers and that Hitler’s decision to invade Greece delayed by several weeks the start of Barbarossa, Hitler’s invasion of the Soviet Union, and that military analysts have stated that the delay caused the Germans to lose the battle for Moscow because of the Russian winter.  A New York Times editorial note by Karl E. Meyer stated that Hitler believed that the several weeks it took Germany to subdue Greece was responsible for his losing the war against the Soviet Union. (See New York Times, April 16, 1994, A20; col.1.)

The Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs should also give consideration to including a quote from the late General Andrew J. Goodpaster, former Supreme Commander of NATO and military attaché to President Dwight D.Eisenhower, who called Greece’s actions against the Axis Powers a turning point in World War II.

The Background Note fails to mention the Truman Doctrine of March 12, 1947 of aid to Greece and Turkey after the United Kingdom told the U.S. it could no longer afford to give such aid to Greece in its struggle against the communist insurgents. Nor does it mention that Greece with U.S. military aid under the Truman Doctrine and military advisors under General James A. Van Fleet, but no U.S. combat soldiers, defeated the communist insurgency which ended in 1949.

The State Department should also consider adding to its “Background Note” that General Goodpaster called Greece’s defeat of the communist insurgents under the Truman Doctrine a turning point in world history.

State’s website omits to detail Secretary of State Henry Kissinger’s failure to stop the Greek dictator Gen. Dimitrios Ioannides coup against the elected government of President Makarios of Cyprus and the attempt to assassinate Makarios.

The Aegean maritime boundary

The statement that “Greece and Turkey have unresolved disagreements regarding the Aegean maritime boundary” is highly misleading and amounts to a cover-up of the U.S. failure to adhere to the rule of law.  Greece stands by the treaty-defined maritime boundary between Greece and Turkey in the Aegean.  It is Turkey who has made an outrageous claim to one half of the Aegean Sea and refuses to take its maritime boundary claim to the International Court of Justice at the Hague for a binding ruling.

The U.S. should publicly state that it accepts as final the treaty-defined demarcation of the maritime border between Greece and Turkey in the Aegean Sea. The relevant agreements are the Lausanne Treaty of 1923, the Italy-Turkey Convention of January 4, 1932, the Italy-Turkey protocol of December 28, 1932 and the 1947 Paris Peace Treaty, under which the Dodecanese Islands and adjacent islets were ceded by Italy to Greece.

The U.S. is a signatory to the 1947 Paris Peace Treaty and is obligated by U.S. law to carry out its provisions.  Yet the State Department has refused to declare publicly what the law is and should do so now.  The U.S. should also vigorously repudiate any challenge to the treaty-defined boundary and should urge Turkey to submit its claim to the International Court of Justice in the Hague for binding arbitration.

The State Department has failed to support H.Con Res 199, which is the legislation regarding the Aegean Sea boundary.  This legislation was introduced by Congressman Robert E. Andrews (D-NJ) on August 2, 2007 with five co-sponsors : Gus Bilirakis (R-FL); Carolyn B.Maloney (D-NY); James P.McGovern (D-MA) Frank Pallone (D-NJ); and Diane E. Watson (D-CA). It was referred to the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Europe.

How can the State Department have a Background Note on Greece which does not mention the above treaties and what the law is?

The Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM)

A sad chapter in U.S. diplomacy is the decision by a handful of advisors to President Bush, including NSC advisor Stephen Hadley and Secretary of State Rice, to recommend that the U.S. recognize the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (fyrom) as Macedonia, a few days after the November 2004 election.  It was done unilaterally without consultation with the Congress or the Greek American community or with Greece, whom they knew strongly opposed such a move.  How can a Background Note on Greece not mention this diplomatic blunder which is coming to the forefront again because fyrom refuses to negotiate the name issue in good faith with Greece and UN mediator Matthew Nimetz, particularly since the U.S. action in November 2004?

The issue of FYROM’s admission to NATO will be discussed shortly and Greece has stated it will veto FYROM’s admission if the name issue is not satisfactorily resolved.  The U.S. should publicly state in the interests of the U.S. that it supports Greece’s position.

Greece’s Strategic Importance to the U.S.

A glaring omission in the Background Note on Greece is the failure to discuss the overall strategic importance of Greece to U.S. interests in the region – Southeast Europe and the Eastern Mediterranean.

The last paragraph under the heading U.S. – Greece Relations states: “In 1953, the first defense cooperation agreement between Greece and the United States was signed, providing for the establishment and operation of American military installations on Greek territory.  The United States closed three of its four main bases in the 1990’s.  The current mutual defense cooperation agreement provides for the operation by the United States of a naval support facility that exploits the strategically located deep-water port and airfield at Souda Bay in Crete.”

The Background Note fails to state that Souda Bay, Crete was central to the U.S. Sixth Fleet’s projection of power in the Eastern Mediterranean in the first Iraq war in 1990-1991 and is central today for the U.S. in the second Iraq war.

There are substitutes for the Incirlik airfield in Turkey.  There is no substitute for the Souda Bay naval base and adjacent airfield.  Mr. Nick Larigakis, Executive Director of the American Hellenic Institute was given a tour of our facilities at Souda Bay and reported on its importance to the U.S.

The first paragraph of the section on U.S. – Greece Relations fails to mention that the U.S. and Greece were also allies in World War I, and with Britain and France the only U.S. allies in every major conflict in the twentieth century.

The Greek merchant marine

Another important omission in the Background Note is its failure to mention the important role of the Greek merchant marine.  It is officially tied to NATO in times of war.  In the first Iraq war it was a major player in the transport of logistical supplies to the area and has also been important in the present Iraq war.

The United States should stop taking Greece for granted and should recognize that Greece is the strategic, political, economic and diplomatic key for the U.S. in the Balkans and the Eastern Mediterranean.

Write to and call Secretary Rice and request that she correct State’s Background Note on Greece.
