Bhopal victims stage own ‘Olympics’ to protest Dow sponsorship (VIDEO, PHOTOS) — RT

Posted by satyrikon στο 27 Ιουλίου, 2012

Dozens of disabled kids affected by the 1984 Bhopal disaster, one of the world’s worst-ever industrial catastrophes, have held their own Games to protest against the London Olympics sponsorship by Dow Chemical.

The children, aged five to 16 and cheered by their nearest and dearest, have participated in 10 sports in Bhopal during the “Special Olympics». The move was aimed to attract attention to the responsibilities of the company, which has a contract with the IOC until 2020 and, in particular, is a sponsor of London Olympics.

Dow Chemical has repeatedly denied any involvement in the tragedy and refuses to add to the $470-million compensation paid out in 1989.

The Bhopal «Olympics» kicked off with children suffering from cerebral palsy, partial paralysis and mental disabilities parading in wheelchairs and walking with the assistance of others around an outdoor stadium in the shadow of the old pesticide plant.

One of the competitions was called «the crab walk»: three children who were unable to stand propelled themselves down the 25-meter racecourse with their hands.

And one little boy was running back and forth on the field even when no race was on.

«The children are born like this because of the gas,» Kesar Bai, a 45-year-old mother from a slum near the old pesticide plant, told AFP. She firmly believes that the disaster and its long-standing influence caused her son Pratap’s severe cerebral palsy.

«I was thinking ‘If there hadn’t been this tragedy, then so many would not be born like this’,» she said, adding that in the area around her shack there were 10-12 ill kids.

Jamila Bi brought her wheelchair-bound 11-year-old grandson Amaan to take part.

«Today these children are participating, in spite of what Union Carbide did to them,» Bi told AP. «We are happy that they will walk. Those people will see that in spite of what they did these children are still participating.»

Some 25,000 residents of Bhopal died in the aftermath of a massive 1984 gas leak in a pesticide factory owned by the American company Union Carbide.

Immediately after tonnes of toxic gas leaked, survivors remember the slums surrounding the pesticide plant being packed with people, many unconscious, vomiting or frothing at the mouth.

«We woke up at 2am in the night. Everyone was running. If you fell down, they ran over you,» Bai remembers.

In 2001, Union Carbide liable for the disaster was purchased by Dow Chemical.

The latter, however, has done little to improve the situation in the disaster-stricken zone.

According to activists’ estimates, 500,000 people are still suffering from illnesses developed after the tragedy, including cancer, blindness and various birth defects.

«We have been protesting against Dow’s sponsorship [of the Olympic Games] for a year now; we want them to be dropped,» organizers’ spokeswoman Rachna Dhingra told Reuters. «But we have realized this is not going to happen.»

SYRIA-Clashes at Republican Guards HQ near Damascus, reports of British forces in Syria — RT

Syrian government forces and the armed opposition are fighting in two Damascus suburbs, while there were also reports of overnight shelling in the capital.

The clashes have been happening in the suburbs of Qudsaya and Hammah, the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reports.

AP also says that fighting raged near the housing compounds and bases of the Republican Guard.

«Artillery fire can be heard regularly in the capital, but it’s the first time that there’s been the sound of such heavy shelling. There was no sound of aircraft however,» says RT’s Maria Finoshina, who is currently in Damascus.

She added that the shelling also appears to be coming from one of the presidential compounds of Bashar al-Assad, and that many ambulances have been rushing injured people to hospital.

The intensified clashes may indicate that a coordinated offensive may be taking place in Syria, reports Israel’s Debkafile website. The attacks are apparently targeting the presidential palace and the compound of the presidential guard, the site reports.

The site says there are unconfirmed reports that British commando forces crossed from Turkey into Syria on Tuesday, according to Gulf military sources. The force may be involved in securing a safe heaven for rebel forces along the border.

There were similar reports in February about the alleged presence of British troops operating in Syria. At the time the British government denied carrying out a clandestine operation in the country.

British media, NATO and UN hype up emotions on the Turkish incident « Eyre International – Bringing You The News No One Else Wants To Bring You

British media, NATO and UN hype up emotions on the Turkish incident

What we are looking at right now is clearly a possible “False Flag” incident to justify an action against Syria when the shooting down of the Turkish Air Force Phantom jet fighter was perfectly legitimate under international law and UN guidelines on the rules of engagement.

The BBC carried the following headline in its biased coverage of this incident when it said:

Turkey calls NATO meeting on warplane downed by Syria – Turkey has called a meeting of NATO member states to discuss its response to the shooting down of one of its warplanes by Syrian forces on Friday.

Ankara has invoked Article 4 of NATO charter, under which consultations can be requested when an ally feels their security is threatened, officials say.

Earlier, Turkey’s foreign minister said the F-4 Phantom was in international airspace when it was shot down.

I find this entire episode truly getting very much out of control with even the Turkish Government now changing their story since the incident on Friday and even in this same BBC article one can read Turkey´s Foreign Ministry stating:  It knew the coordinates of the jet, which was in Syrian territorial waters at a depth of 1,300m (4,265ft), but has not yet found it………..so why the hype and why is this escalating into a possible armed conflict between NATO – Syria and why has the  UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon today expressed “his deep concern” about the incident.

Posted by satyrikon στο 12 Μαρτίου, 2010

Companies such as

Greece’s Wind Hellas,

a telecoms operator,

and Germany’s

car parts maker Schefenacker

briefly moved

their headquarters to the UK to undergo a British administration procedure.

Businesses need only be resident here for a few weeks,

have a UK address and pay the lawyers’ fees.

Firms flock to ‘bankruptcy brothel’ UK

A GREEK multinational company has deprived creditors of £1.3 billion by claiming that a one-man London office was its global headquarters and exploiting lenient insolvency rules introduced by Labour.

Wind Hellas, Greece’s third-largest telecoms company, moved its assets to Britain from Luxembourg in August. Its tiny London head office consisted of one man, one desk and a computer.

Two weeks later it began the process leading to its adminstration, using a financial device known as a “pre-pack” which grew out of legislation championed by Gordon Brown when he was chancellor.

When Wind Hellas subsequently collapsed, more than a third of its debt was wiped out, including £9m owed to Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS), which is 84% owned by the taxpayer.

London becomes bankruptcy capital of Europe

The Greek telecoms group Wind Hellas, owned by an Italian investment firm that is run by an Egyptian billionaire, moved to London and almost immediately went bust, raising the question of whether this was the real purpose of the move. The plan cost creditors, including British State-owned banks, tens of millions of pounds.
