Land Destroyer: US Ambassador’s Death: Fruits of US Foreign Policy

Posted by satyrikon στο 13 Σεπτεμβρίου, 2012

US-Backed Terrorists in Syria Responsible for Ambassador’s Death in Libya.
 by Tony Cartalucci

September 13, 2012 – The US has sworn to «make pay» those responsible for the death of US Ambassador Christopher Stevens. In reality, those responsible for Stevens’ death are fully armed, funded, trained, and coordinating with NATO special forces in Libya, across North Africa, and in Syria.

Image: Ambassador Stevens (right, wearing a blue tie) had been in Benghazi, Libya since March 2011. He played a leading role in coordinating the violent subversion of Libya by listed terrorist organizations before being named «US Ambassador» to Libya. Despite Libya’s capital being located over 400 miles west in Tripoli, Stevens was based out of Benghazi, the 30 year epicenter of  terrorist extremism and Al Qaeda in Libya. Recent attacks on US embassies were designed to give «street credit» to sectarian extremists who are increasingly seen internationally as mercenary proxies of US-Saudi-Israeli foreign policy – Stevens’ death was most likely an accident.

….

No one will «pay» beyond perhaps a wedding party attacked by US drones, or a limited liquidation of select terrorist groups the US created and armed during 2011’s violent overthrow of the Libyan government. Meanwhile, US warships and Marines will swarm around Libya simply to fulfill Western public expectations that «something» will be done.

The embassy attacks were tacitly supported by the respective client-regimes recently installed by US political and military destabilization, and were designed to reestablish an adversarial narrative to counter growing public awareness of the US’ use of terrorist proxies, and specifically, Al Qaeda in nations like Libya, Syria, Iraq, and Iran. We are now expected to believe that Egypt’s new dictator Mohamed Morsi, and the terrorists of Libya whom the US is right now arming and supporting in Syria, are once again our implacable enemies.

In all likelihood, those behind the attacks on the embassies intended the violence to be limited in scope, and without any high-profile deaths – designed simply to lend sorely lacking legitimacy to America’s growing list of client-states. Ambassador Stevens apparently was caught in smoke while escaping from the US consulate in Benghazi, and died of asphyxiation – a victim of unforeseen circumstances, not the victim of a targeted assassination. However, with a high ranking US diplomat dead in Libya, in Benghazi, the very den of Al Qaeda, leaves the United States and its foreign policy, especially in regards to Syria, in tatters.

US Support of Terrorism in Libya Stretches Back Three Decades

«The details of the plan were sketchy, but it seemed to be a classic CIA destabilization campaign. One element was a “disinformation” program designed to embarrass Kaddafi and his government. Another was the creation of a “counter government” to challenge his claim to national leadership. A third — potentially the most risky — was an escalating paramilitary campaign, probably by disaffected Libyan nationals, to blow up bridges, conduct small-scale guerrilla operations and demonstrate that Kaddafi was opposed by an indigenous political force.» –Newsweek, «A Plan to Overthrow Kaddafi,» August 3, 1981

It has been a long time since US territory abroad, i.e., a US embassy, was openly attacked. It has been even longer, or about 33 years, since a US ambassador was last killed in the line of duty in 1979 Afghanistan. Both happened last night. Below, courtesy of Reuters, are pictures of the event.

US uses contractors to bypass international humanitarian laws — RT

(AFP Photo/Marwan Naamani)

The use of private contractors allows the US to evade responsibility for violations of international humanitarian legislation, a top Russian diplomat for human rights and democracy said.

The comment came from Foreign Ministry Commissioner Konstantin Dolgov as the US Justice Department halted an investigation into the attempted bribing of Iraqi police officials by employees of the Blackwater security company (re-branded as ‘Academi’ in late 2011).

Blackwater attempted to pay $1 million in bribes for new contracts in Iraq, and also to block an investigation into the 2007 murder of 17 Iraqi civilians, including several children, by Blackwater operatives, a statement published on the Russian Foreign Ministry’s website said.

The US State Department didn’t end its relationship with Blackwater for two years after the tragedy, Dolgov said.

“Despite the scandalous experience with the Blackwater company, the US military and foreign policy agencies continue to attract contractors for doing the ‘dirty work’ in the zone of armed conflicts,” Dolgov said. “Such outsourcing of state functions to private firms allows the US government to evade the responsibility for violation of international humanitarian norms.”

“The Blackwater case is a vivid example of impunity enjoyed by the employees of private security companies, despite blatant violations of international Human Rights standards. The current situation is a result of the inconsistent and selective actions of the US authorities, who ignore the rights of Iraqis who fall victim to the employees of private security companies. We expect that the US authorities will at last take some measures to punish the responsible contractors of the company formerly known as Blackwater,” the statement read.

Dolgov added that a US court had sentenced Russian citizen Viktor Bout to 25 years in prison for his alleged intention to sell weapons to Colombian rebels, while the “company that succeeded Blackwater” received no punishment after confessing to illegally supplying weapons to Iraq, Afghanistan and Sudan. “Is not it a very visual demonstration of double standards used by the US justice?” he said.

US Army guerrilla faction planned terror, Obama’s assassination — RT

A group of US soldiers planning to take over their base, blow up targets around the country, wrest control of the government and kill the president – it could be a Hollywood blockbuster, but it’s a developing story in the southern state of Georgia.

Four US Army soldiers from the Fort Stewart base in southeast Georgia are charged with killing a former comrade and his girlfriend in a bid to prevent the couple from informing on a militia group of which they were all members.

One of the soldiers has agreed to cooperate with the prosecution in exchange for a lesser charge, while the rest are charged with malicious murder, felony murder, criminal gang activity, aggravated assault and using a firearm while committing a felony.

The case’s prosecutors paint a vivid picture of the group’s plans and actions.

Taking over the sprawling Fort Stewart base, bombing a fountain in nearby Savannah, bombing a dam and poisoning the apple crop in Washington State, and, eventually, toppling the US government and killing the president – these were the goals of the group, which called itself F.E.A.R., an acronym for Forever Enduring Always Ready.

“This domestic terrorist organization did not simply plan and talk,” said prosecutor Isabel Pauley. “Prior to the murders in this case, the group took action. Evidence shows the group possessed the knowledge, means and motives to carry out their plans.”

According to the prosecution, the group is the brainchild of one Pvt. Issac Aguigui, who allegedly sought out soldiers who were in trouble or disillusioned.

Members could easily identify each other by distinctive tattoos resembling the anarchy symbol.

Little information is available about the man behind the plan, however. Gossip website Gawker.com identified Aguigui as a page during the 2008 Republican Convention. Prosecutors say that during a videotaped interview with military investigators, Aguigui called himself “the nicest cold-blooded murderer you will ever meet.”

Aguigui’s pregnant wife died last year – and though he was never charged with her death, prosecutors say the judge finds it «highly suspicious.”

The $500,000 of insurance and benefits Aguigui received after his wife’s death financed the group’s activities. At least $87,000 went towards the purchase of semiautomatic rifles and bomb components. An undisclosed amount was spent on the acquisition of land in Washington State for the group’s use.

While it’s unclear how easy it was to join the group, there seems to have been only one way to leave it.

Former soldier Michael Roark, also a member of the militia, was killed just two days after leaving the Army. He and girlfriend Tiffany York were killed by other F.E.A.R. members, allegedly on the orders of Aguigui, who called them “loose ends” and believed they would betray others, prosecutors say.

The pair was taken to the woods under the pretense of going to shooting practice, and both were then shot in the head.

The Army seems to have had some knowledge of the gang’s activities, going so far as to charge four soldiers with the slayings of Roark and York in March. But the charges were never acted upon, and were later dropped.

Moreover, Fort Stewart spokesperson Kevin Larson said, “Fort Stewart-Hunter Army Airfield does not have a gang or militia problem.” He added, however, that Army investigators are still working on the case.

Posted by satyrikon στο 22 Αυγούστου, 2012

The jury is still out whether Israel will or will not attack Iran, despite the endless and relentless (dis)information in the media from all sides, and certainly when such an attack might happen, but if it did take place, these are all the logistically possible formats what an airborne attack could look like.

Via Stratfor:

A unilateral strike on the Iranian nuclear program is not Israel’s preferred option. However, if Israel does decide to proceed with the mission unilaterally, the different routes the strike package could take each pose unique challenges. Currently, the Israeli air force has three principal routes to its targets in Iran. The first route involves flying northward over the eastern Mediterranean Sea between Cyprus and Syria, and then proceeding eastward along the Turkey-Syria border, flying through northern Iraq and into Iran. This route circumvents Syria’s air defense network, which was built to cover its western flank against an Israeli air attack. The second route is the shortest and involves flying directly over Jordan and Iraq to reach Iran. Due to the shorter distance, the likelihood that Jordan could be deterred from interfering with the strike package, and the absence of any viable Iraqi air defense, this route probably poses the least risk. The third route goes through northern Saudi Arabia, over the Persian Gulf and into Iran. While most of Saudi Arabia’s air defenses and air bases are oriented toward the Persian Gulf and the main cities to the south, Israeli planes would almost certainly be detected, especially since they would have to fly near Tabuk’s air base. If Riyadh did choose to intercept the Israeli aircraft, the Israeli air force would face serious complications because Saudi Arabia has a large number of advanced interceptor aircraft. As the war in Syria intensifies, another route may become viable. Rebel operations have already negatively affected the Syrian regime’s air defenses somewhat. If this trend intensifies, the country’s air defense network may be degraded to the extent that the Israeli air force would be able to fly directly over Syria without undue risk to its aircraft.

Of course, if the US were to engage alongside Israel, presidential elections notwithstanding, and the numerous US aircraft carriers stationed in the Gulf and the Arabian Sea were to participate in any offensive, then all predictive bets are off. One thing is certain: it is, at least in Israel’s view, that the window of attack is rapidly closing, which may explain why crude is once again trading on edge every single day, and why gas at the pump, has once again never been more expensive on this day in history, a fact which the Romney camp will certainly hone in on soon to quite soon.

Summary: Wikileaks’ latest trove of leaked Stratfor emails details the breadth and potential impact of the TrapWire surveillance system. What is it, and are you affected?

Zack Whittaker

By for Zero Day | August 14, 2012 — 17:59 GMT (10:59 PDT)

Wikileaks has released as part of its The Global Intelligence Files series another vast cache of leaked emails from private intelligence firm Stratfor. Brought to the public eye is a system called TrapWire. This previously little known technology may have the ability to impact our everyday lives in the U.S. and abroad.

This serves as an FAQ to what we know so far.

It’s worth noting — as described below — Wikileaks has been under a sustained denial-of-service attack, which has left the site unable to load for days, so some links below may not be available at the time of publication.

Here’s what you need to know.

What is TrapWire?

In short, TrapWire is surveillance software used by both private industry and the U.S. government and its allies oversees, allowing both public and private sector users to help in counter-terrorism and anti-crime efforts.  The software uses algorithms and data from a variety of surveillance sources — including CCTV and human-input from spotted ‘suspicious’ behavior — to, in essence, ‘predict’ potentially criminal activity.

One leaked Stratfor-owned document, describes it as follows:

There are a variety of new tools, such as TrapWire, a software system designed to work with camera systems to help detect patterns of pre-operational surveillance, that can be focused on critical areas to help cut through the fog of noise and activity and draw attention to potential threats.

While ordinary CCTV cameras are often ‘passive’ and monitored by humans, TrapWire-connected cameras, such as ‘pan-tilt-zoom’ cameras, are able to track people, along with license plate readers, called Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) from place to place.

A U.S. Patents and Trademark Office filing says the system is «centralized» and information flows in and out of its global office to ‘regional’ distribution centers.  Despite being owned by a private company, the information collected by the system «can also be shared with law enforcement agencies.»

As with any data mining software, the more data that is plugged into the system the greater its effectiveness.

Why such a recent controversy?

Wikileaks’ latest release on August 10 of emails from private intelligence group Stratfor suggests the system is global, rather than limited to just the United States.

Simply put: it became increasingly clear how wide and far the extensive use of this software is. If one person is deemed to be acting suspiciously in one TrapWire covered area of the U.S., for example, the software may pick them up elsewhere by a different TrapWire network.

It also means that the surveillance once thought to be relatively passive is instead pre-emptive and sophisticated in its methods. It uses a «10-characteristic description of individuals,» human activity, or «8-characteristic description» of vehicle information — such as license plates and other identifiable marks — which is then correlated with other information collected elsewhere.

The ‘TrapWire Threat Meter’ means threats can be passed on through the network while vulnerabilities are not, though nevertheless remains a far more extensive breach of citizen privacy than first considered or understood.

The system appears to be ‘for hire’ in that it can be bought and used by private industry. For example, in a 2005 interview with former CIA employee (since removed from his corporate profile) and Abraxas founder and chief executive Richard Helms, he says:

…the nuclear industry has 104 civilian owned and operated nuclear power plants, and yet they don’t collect or share pre-attack information. TrapWire can help do that without infringing anyone’s civil liberties.

In a 2007 whitepaper, Abraxas describes TrapWire’s ability to determine «suspicious activity in less than 60 seconds.»

Who owns TrapWire, and how does it connect with governments?

The TrapWire software is now owned by TrapWire Inc., a Reston, VA company. But it wasn’t always.

(Comment was sought from TrapWire Inc. regarding this story, but no reply had been received at the time of writing.)

Abraxas Corp. created TrapWire under its subsidiary firm Abraxas Applications Inc., according to Public Intelligence, a respected research site. Abraxas Corp. trademarked the TrapWire software in a filing with the U.S. PTO in 2006.

But Abraxas Corp. is now owned by Cubic Corporation, which bought the firm in November 2010 for $124 million in cash.

According to one report, Cubic acquired Abraxas Corp., TrapWire’s former parent company, after TrapWire was spun out as a separate entity. One of the terms of the acquisition was to «cause the corporate name of Abraxas Applications, Inc. to be changed to a name that does not include ‘Abraxas’ or any variation thereof.»

Abraxas, in a statement released on Monday, said: «Abraxas Corporation then and now has no affiliation with Abraxas Applications now known as TrapWire, Inc.»

Abraxas is based in Northern Virginia, according to the trademark filing. Many of its employees — there are around 60 listed on LinkedIn, but thought to be in the low hundreds — come from the U.S. military or other public sector organizations, including the U.S. intelligence community.

The U.S. government has given both TrapWire and Abraxas more than $1.6 million in the past 12 months from the Dept. of Homeland Security, Dept. of Defense, and the General Services Administration.

In one leaked email, former Stratfor chief executive and current vice president Fred Burton claims:

Do you know how much a Lockheed Martin [defense contractor] would pay to have their logo/feed into the USSS CP? MI5? RCMP? LAPD CT? NYPD CT?

This suggests that the NYPD and LAPD counter-terrorism divisions, the U.S. Secret Service, Canada’s Royal Canadian Mounted Police and the U.K.’s domestic intelligence agency MI5 are all clientele of the TrapWire service.

Land Destroyer: The Syrian Government is Not Isolated

Posted by satyrikon στο 12 Αυγούστου, 2012

Syria

Largest nations on Earth converge to support embattled Syrian government.
by Tony Cartalucci

August 11, 2012Iran has recently hosted 30 nations including Russia, China, India, Pakistan, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Ecuador, Afghanistan, Algeria, Iraq, Oman, Turkmenistan, Venezuela, Cuba, Jordan, Tunisia, Palestine, and many others in Tehran this week in efforts to support the Syrian government against foreign destabilization. Upon the agenda were calls to end foreign arms currently flowing into terrorist hands inside Syria, proposals to broker a meaningful ceasefire, the coordination of humanitarian aid, and supporting the Syrian people’s right to reform without foreign interference.

The unique conference featured representatives of over half of the world’s population, and signals that indeed, Syria’s government is not as «isolated» as portrayed by Western neo-imperialists.

Image: An impressive counter to the so-called «Friends of Syria» confabs held by Wall Street and London corporate-financier interests in an attempt to sway global opinion toward a repeat of Libya’s destruction at NATO’s hands, the International Consultative Conference hosed by Iran seeks to end the flow of foreign arms into militant hands and resolve political differences through more civilized means.

….

The meeting comes as revelations emerge that the United States, United Kingdom, NATO-member Turkey, and members of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) are supplying weapons, cash, and other assistance to foreign militants with direct links to Al Qaeda. These include Libyan Islamic Fighting Group (LIFG) militants who are in fact listed by both the US State Department and the UK Home Office (page 5, .pdf) as a foreign terrorist organization and a proscribed terrorist organization respectively.

As foreign militants continue to flow over Syria’s borders bolstered with an increase in foreign aid, sectarian violence has spiraled out of control. The UN has categorically failed to condemn the West’s state sponsorship of international terrorism now ravaging Syria. It appears that nations around the world, including shareholders in the Anglo-American establishment, may be having second thoughts about the increasingly untenable enterprise the West has chosen to pursue.

Earlier this month, during a Saudi-Qatari sponsored, US-UK-backed UN resolution, a large number of nations either voted no, abstained, or failed to attend the vote, indicating slipping support for what is sometimes called the «Washington consensus.»

US, GCC, and NATO actions in Libya in support of sectarian militants to install a stable of Western-created proxies into power has stripped away much of the «primacy» of «international law» and left the willfully abused geopolitical tenant of «responsibility to protect» (R2P) irrevocably in tatters. With the West’s attempted destabilization of Syria stalled, global public opinion has grown aware of the true nature of Syria’s so-called «rebels,» and that many are foreign fighters committing an array of abhorrent atrocities. The UN’s failure to act, or even worse, its role in facilitating what equates to military aggression couched in «humanitarian» pretenses, jeopardizes international law all together.

The West has ungracefully faced this quandary of its own creation by simultaneously attempting to use the presence of Al Qaeda terrorists as a causus belli to militarily intervene while also rebranding Al Qaeda as champions of freedom in Syria. One breathtaking account was given by the Fortune 500-funded Council on Foreign Relations in their article, «Al-Qaeda’s Specter in Syria,» claiming:

«The Syrian rebels would be immeasurably weaker today without al-Qaeda in their ranks. By and large, Free Syrian Army (FSA) battalions are tired, divided, chaotic, and ineffective. Feeling abandoned by the West, rebel forces are increasingly demoralized as they square off with the Assad regime’s superior weaponry and professional army. Al-Qaeda fighters, however, may help improve morale. The influx of jihadis brings discipline, religious fervor, battle experience from Iraq, funding from Sunni sympathizers in the Gulf, and most importantly, deadly results. In short, the FSA needs al-Qaeda now.»

Clearly, no nation in good conscience, or at least interested in self-preservation, could condone the overt destabilization of Syria by foreign powers with disingenuous motives, using listed-terrorist organizations to do so. The potential of this same ploy then being turned against other nations including members of Iran’s 30 nation conference, or even the US and UK’s «Friends of Syria» confabs, becomes increasingly more likely if such tactics are not condemned and altogether balked.

While US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton talks of «no-fly zones» with NATO-member Turkey this week, the successful conference in Tehran illustrates that any such act of aggression will be carried out unilaterally, further undermining the West’s own contrived «international order» with a growing number of nations standing in direct opposition, not in support of, Wall Street and London’s next move.

Iran plans to hold another such conferencelater this month.
